ABOUT THE FILM

After he drunkenly insults the lord of Hell, petty thief Raja (Jr. NTR) finds himself in a battle of wits with Yama Dharma Raja (Mohan Babu) in S.S. Rajamouli’s YAMADONGA. Yama brazenly cuts Raja’s life short by several decades in order to teach him a lesson, but once the condemned arrives for judgment, it turns out he’s smarter than anyone had anticipated. Now, the two are in a battle for the throne of hell, one full of dance, romance, action, and all of the creativity for which Rajamouli has become known. A stellar example of the Tollywood film genre known as socio-fantasy in which mere mortals interact and spar with deities, YAMADONGA spans the distance between masala and devotional film. Uniquely Tollywood in its rhythms and themes, this is a snapshot of a filmmaker finding his way from potboiler pop cinema to something more broadly appealing.
